Not far from the floating dock is St Mary Redcliffe Church. It is thought that this is the fifth church to have been built on this site and some parts of this impressive building date back to the 12th century. The church is clearly visible from the harbourside and it is little wonder that it was an important focus for seafarers in medieval times. When they spotted the spire, they knew that they had reached home safely. St Mary Redcliffe is well known for its amazing Gothic architecture. Step inside and admire the splendid interior with its wonderful stained glass windows and then take a walk into the churchyard. See if you can spot the piece of tram rail sticking out of the ground. The tram rail ended up here after a Second World War bomb fell close by.
Entry to the church is free but donations are welcome. Guided tours for groups are available by prior arrangement or you can buy a guidebook at the gift shop. There is also a Cafe serving refreshments, breakfast and lunch.
